I spent today doing some tidying and sweeping and dusting, and I finally tackled this stitching room/office. I've only lived here 2 years; can you spell "procrastinate"? Anyhoo, here is an "after" picture of one corner of the room.
It still needs some work and I'm going to buy or make a throw to go over the chair, which is something that my parents had when they were first married in 1954 and has been re-covered at least 3 times and needs it again but that's not a project I'm interested in tackling. My problem in this room is those brown things on the wall. They are wooden molding and they run just to the window and then the length of the wall on the right and I.hate.them. Hate them. Just hate them. I suppose they were supposed to be, like, I don't know, plate rails or something, but they just don't work for me. So here's my dilemma. I'm afraid to try to take them off because I can't tell whether they're nailed on or glued and if they're glued, I cringe at the mess I could make of the walls. So for now I'm stuck with them. My plan is to paint the room either a rose pink or a sage green and I think I have three options for the things:
1. leave them as they are and paint around them
2. paint them white and pain the color around them (if I do this, I'm thinking the closet door and baseboards will have to be painted white as well)
3. paint them the same color that I paint the room
You guys are a bunch of creative folks, so I'm gathering opinions. What would you do with it if it were your room? One of these three choices or something else?
Believe it or not, there's something in this room that I like less than I like the rail around the wall and this is it:
It's wrought iron and much heavier-looking than in the picture. It and the blinds are going when the room gets painted. It might be okay in a den or a man room, but somehow I don't think it'll work with lace curtains!
Have a great week and happy stitching!

If you hate the chair rails that much I would go for it....even if there was a little glue...sand paper would take that off and you would be done with it...dont be afraid. Take if off, go to your local lowes and ask about what to use to get it off and be done with it. lol As you can tell I am project driven so I say do it and dont let it scare you....keep us posted. Love your Anna! As for the rail things on the wall, hmmmm. Well, if you painted them the same color as the wall, they'd sort of disappear, right? I'm not very good with decorating, but that would certainly be an option.
You can stitch some samplers of a specific size and hang them between the rails. You can hang things from the rails by putting hooks or brass nails, scissor fobs and thread .You could space the great nails about 1 in apart and that would hang a lot of thread and become part of the decor...I use mens tie racks to hang my thread... they were left over after my husband passed and it would have ruined the hollow doors to remove them.. another friend hangs her necklaces from her left over tie racks. go with the flow, Make lemonade...carol
Anna looks great!
If you hate the rail thingies, then paint them the same color as the wall. Painting them white would accent them, or make it appear as an accent on the wall.
I absolutely LOVE wrought iron!! LOL
Lovely progress on Anna, I really love the colours in this piece!
I think the rails look worse because they are so dark against the light walls. My instinct would be to paint them white and paint the walls a pale (ish) colour so that the rails don't stand out too much. I like the idea of hanging pictures between them as well. I quite like the wrought iron pole, but I'm not a fan of black accessories, as they're quite heavy. You could spray paint it gold or silver, which would look lovely with sheer curtains :)
